Mount Gilead Farm is a family-owned farm in the mountains of western North Carolina, only 20 minutes from downtown Asheville. We are the third owners of what started 90 years ago as a cow dairy, and are presently in the process of converting it to a goat dairy and cheesemaking business. Many farmers do not particularly like people (which is why they became farmers), so actual working farms are mysterious places to many people, who, increasingly, have never set foot on one. Visitors are welcome at Mt. Gilead Farm, where we emphasize the ‘agricultural’ part of agritourism. Step into—not back into—a working farm populated by dairy and meat goats and their kids, along with the related enterprises of heritage chickens, rabbits, turkeys and pigs. Depending on the season, you can play with baby goats, watch goats being milked and cheese being made, harvest asparagus and strawberries, see what is involved in making hay, or gather peaches, apples and pears. Many of these things are also available for purchase.
